Take Your Speech for a Test Drive

Now that you are comfortable with the draft of your speech, you can take it for a test drive. If you read your first draft aloud to yourself and were able to record it as your read, that first recording will serve you well as you compare it to the recording of your second draft.

Read your speech aloud. Read your speech aloud several times, keeping track of the time it takes to read from beginning to end. Each time you read, you will become more comfortable with the pacing of the speech and the flow of ideas.

After you have read the speech aloud several times, make another recording of yourself reading through your second draft. After you have recorded yourself, listen to your recording and take note of your pace, your vocal quality, and the flow of ideas from beginning to end.

When you initially recorded your first draft, you were interested primarily in the text of your speech. Now, as you record and listen to your second draft, you will start to focus on your delivery as well.

Listening to your second draft, continue to consider comprehensibility of mission and vision, but also begin to make note of your vocal quality. You know now, however, if you can or cannot be heard. You will hear on the tape if you are garbling words, speaking too fast or cutting off the beginnings or ending of certain words. For anything that you hear on your recording that you feel you will need to work on to be heard and/or understood, make note of it.
